In Mussar, there are extremes in the middot (measured character trait/soul-trait), where even a middah like Patience has its unbalanced characteristics. We understand middot on a continuum, where we are practicing toward our own assessment of the Golden Mean and moderation, what is balanced for us in our own particular curriculum.
Intolerance—Patience––Bears Too Much
Just as in Mussar, Theravada Buddhism teaches there are “enemies” to the Brahma Viharas: Metta/Lovingkindness, Equanimity, Compassion and Sympathetic Joy. There are near and far enemies, and in Mussar we would view these as unbalanced middot in need of attention, and perhaps part of the understanding of the yetzer hara (the evil inclination or impulse in all of us). For example, in Metta/ Lovingkindness, the near enemy is attachment/lust and the far enemy is anger. These enemies, unbalanced middot, manifest in different words, thoughts and deeds depending on the situation (how we relate to ourselves, others and God).
There are five hindrances to balanced living and practicing the Noble Eightfold Path in Theravada Buddhism that correspond to the middot of Mussar that would be considered hindrances, called obstacles, to living the life of a soul.
THERAVADA
Attachment (desire)
Aversion (Ill Will)
Sloth & Torpor (Sleepiness)
Restlessness (Agitation, Worry)
Doubt
MUSSAR
Nefesh, Greed
Lack of Responsibility, Lack of Humility, Hatred
Laziness, Lack of Responsibility, Lack of Fear of God
Doubt, Worry (Lack of Trust)
Too Much Humility, Lack of Honor
Finally, what is called the Noble Eightfold Path, with its eight precepts, indeed the path, reflects wise behaviors, wise ways-of-being that we would describe as mitzvot/commandments in Judaism and Mussar. Both ancient traditions fundamentally understand that without a mindful, daily, ethical, moral compass and framework in which one operates in the world, one is not truly practicing or inhabiting the Path, be it toward wisdom, freedom, nirvana, or holiness
